How to Pack a Self Storage Container Efficiently
Whether you’re using a 5ft, 10ft, 20ft or 40ft container at Adlington Storage in Bollington, packing it properly makes a big difference. Good packing protects your belongings, maximises the space you’ve paid for, and makes unloading much easier later.
Here’s a practical guide to packing a self storage container efficiently.
1. Plan Before You Start
Make a list of everything you plan to store.
Measure larger items (sofas, beds, fridges, wardrobes).
Decide what needs to stay accessible and what can go at the back.
Gather strong boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, tape, and furniture covers.
A little planning stops you running out of space halfway through.
2. Use Strong, Uniform Boxes
Choose sturdy boxes that are similar in size where possible.
Fill boxes completely so they don’t collapse when stacked.
Keep the heaviest items in smaller boxes so they’re easier to lift.
Label every box clearly on the side (not just the top) with the room and contents.
Uniform boxes stack much more efficiently than a mix of random shapes and sizes.
3. Load in the Right Order
Start with heavy and large items first:
Place sofas, mattresses, appliances, and heavy furniture at the back or along the sides.
Stand sofas and mattresses on their ends (protected with covers) to save floor space.
Put heavier items at the bottom of any stack.
Then fill gaps with lighter items:
Use boxes, bags, and smaller furniture to fill spaces.
Place fragile items near the top or in a clearly marked area.
4. Maximise Vertical Space
Containers have useful height — use it.
Stack boxes up to a safe height.
Place lighter boxes on top of heavier ones.
Use shelving or create levels with strong boards if needed.
Fill the upper spaces with soft items such as duvets, cushions, or bags of clothing.
Leaving empty space above your items wastes capacity.
5. Disassemble What You Can
Take apart bed frames, tables, and shelving units.
Keep screws and fittings in clearly labelled bags taped to the furniture.
Remove legs from tables and sofas where possible.
Disassembled furniture takes up far less room and is easier to protect.
6. Protect Fragile and Valuable Items
Wrap glass, mirrors, and pictures in bubble wrap or blankets.
Fill empty spaces inside boxes with packing paper so items can’t move.
Store especially valuable or delicate items in a clearly marked section near the door for easy access.
7. Leave a Small Access Path (If Needed)
If you think you’ll need to get something out before the end of your storage period, leave a narrow walkway or place frequently needed items near the door. Otherwise, pack tightly from back to front for maximum efficiency.
8. Final Checks Before Closing the Door
Make sure nothing is pressing against the doors.
Check that heavier items are stable and won’t shift.
Take a couple of photos of the packed container for your own records.
Lock the container securely.
